Cast

Gist: Aarya and Barath are orphans who have been best of friends since childhood. They grow up to be contract killers. Haniffa is a government employee who moon lights as a middleman delivering assignments to Aarya and Barath. Most of the hit men come across two types of women – women who are not repulsed by their profession and women who get scared of them. Padmapriya plays the first type and Pooja plays the latter type. Barath and Aarya decide to quit their profession after they kill a big shot in Coimbatore. But fate is a funny thing ain’t it? It has a strange way of making amends.

My 2 cents: Whenever a subject gets popular in Kodambakkam, directors and story writers are so keen on riding the wave that the same story line is repeated in two movies that are released around the same time. Now the craze is about the underworld. Naalai and Pattiyal have the same story. We will never know who stole the idea from whom, but atleast Pattiyal was coherent and well made.

The movie gives as realistic account of the lives of hit men. Contrary to popular perceptions, most of the time they are not people with special training, they are just ordinary people who choose killing as profession. They don’t have any remorse about their profession. They are neither rich nor have political backing. In fact most of them don’t even own sophisticated weapons that aide in their profession. They come dime a dozen and are easily dispensable. The director subtly and explicitly points out all the above through out the movie. When he shows Aarya and Barath learning to shoot by watching Hollywood movies, it is a subtle emphasis on their lack of shooting skills.

In Boys Barath was just a guy who danced well. In Pattiyal he is guy who can act as well. He plays a deaf and dumb guy and scores and ace in his acting. The scene where Pooja throws him out of the house after she witnesses Barath wielding a revolver, he pours out his emotions with hand gestures.

Padmapriya shows versatility. She is a little too hyper at times, but over all delivers a good performance.

Pooja plays a middle class family girl who falls for Barath without any knowledge about his profession. She tends to hand gesture a lot even to people who can hear well, was kind of funny. No serious complaints about her in the acting department.

Sporting a stubble, unruly hair and an irritated expression seems to be Aarya’s version of a hit man. He could have done some more homework on his role. Some times when he yells it is difficult to understand what he is saying.

Verdict: Pattiyal was like a Chase novel.

Gist: Same beaten down old love story from the times of Alaigal Oiyvadhillai. The backdrop for the movie is Madurai. Sandhya is the daughter of a wealthy businessman. She is a school girl in her 9th standard and falls in love with Barath. What is so special about Barath that Sandhya picks him to spend the rest of her life with? Is he wealthy? Nope. Is he educated? Nope. Do they share the same interests? Nope. He is the first guy to give Sandhya a piece of his mind, that’s what attracts her to him. They decide to elope for Madras and struggle to start a life. Meanwhile Sandhya’s folks are frantic. They find out through Sandhya’s schoolmate that they are in Madras and come to Madras to get her. They promise Barath and Sandhya that they will not harm them, lure them back to Madurai, beat Barath black and blue and force Sandhya to marry someone else. Few years later Sandhya finds out that Barath has lost his mind after Sandhya left him. Sandhya’s understanding husband learns about all this and takes care of Barath.

My 2 cents: The positive point of this movie is that most of it is very realistic. In fact the director, Balaji Shakthivel claims that it is a real life story. The director has pointed out that life is not a bed of roses for young lovers who elope. Sandhya’s uncle who comes to Madras in search of her sweet talks them in to returning to Madurai. As their convoy reaches Madurai, he slowly shows his true colors. These are some scenes that closely resemble real life. On the flip side, Sandhya and Barath seem to have fallen in love for no strong reason. So when they struggle to begin a life, it fails to get my sympathy. I felt like shouting, ‘serves you two right’ at the top of my voice. The climax where Sandhya’s husband learns about the truth and assumes responsibility for Barath is very dramatic. Both Barath and Sandhya have proved that they can act well. The little boy who acts as Barath’s assistant is abolutely irritating. I just can’t stand little kids who act all grown up. Joushua Sridhar’s music is pleasing.

Verdict: Kadhal is highly overrated.

Gist: A regular ‘boy loves girl, girl loves another boy, that boy loves some other girl’ story. Barath comes to city in search of his lover, Dheepu only to find that she is in love with Arunkumar. Barath meets Mallika Kapoor who is nursing a secret crush for Arunkumar. So Barath and Mallika Kapoor team up to split Arunkumar and Dheepu. But there is a neat little twist after the intermission. The girl Barath is in love is Mallika Kapoor and not Dheepu. Barath sacrifies his love to make Mallika Kapoor’s love come true.

My 2 cents: Mallika Kapoor and Barath have the right chemistry. Renuka, as Barath’s mother has delivered a good performance. The plans Barath and Mallika Kapoor come up to split up Arunkumar and Dheepu invokes laughter. Old fashioned but cute cartoons that pop up in the first half of the movie are worth mentioning.

Verdict: No double/triple meaning dialogues, no explict sexual content, decent U rated entertainment for the whole family.
